Day by Day Overview

You are personally met by Kubwa Five Safari driver/guide upon arrival at Kanombe (Kigali) airport and transferred to Akagera National Park, a trip of about two hours. Located in eastern Rwanda, on the border with Tanzania, the park has beautiful undulating plains with dense, broad-leafed woodland, lighter acacia woodland and rolling grassland with an extensive series of lakes linked by papyrus swamps forming a sprawling wetland.

Akagera Game Lodge is located in the south of Akagera National Park in Kayonza District, Eastern Province, Rwanda. From the lodge you can enjoy some amazing views of Lake Ihema. It offers comfortable accommodation with simple but tastefully furnished rooms, restaurant, swimming pool, curio bar, tennis court and a few other life comforts. There is access to wifi and television for those who cannot live without communication channels.

Spend the whole day in Akagera National Park with game drives aiming to spot elephants, buffalos, giraffes and lions and antelopes. The park is also home to hundreds of birds including the rare shoebill stork.

After breakfast, we drive to Butare and visit the National Museum, which has a fine display of the history of the country and its people. Have lunch at Ibis Hotel then continue to Nyungwe National Park.

Gisakura Guest House is located 2km outside the Nyungwe National Park close to the Gisakura Tea Estate. Its accommodation is cheap and comfortable. Rooms are of three categories furnished with shower and hot water is always available from electric heater.

Nyungwe National Park is home to 13 primate species including chimps and colobus monkeys, around 300 bird species, 24 of which are regional endemics, and over 100 varieties of orchids and butterflies. Lunch at Gisakura Guest House then drive to Lake Kivu.

Kibuye Guest House, situated in the western part of Rwanda, was built on the shores of Lake Kivu, approximately 140 km from Kigali city. The guest house was recently renovated and offers a comfortable stay.

Enjoy a morning boat ride on Lake Kivu. On the Rwanda/Congo border, Kivu is a giant inland lake with some interesting lakeside towns. Afterwards drive along the shore of the lake to Gisenyi.

Kivu Sun Hotel is a newly constructed 4-star hotel located in Gisenyi. On the shores of Lake Kivu, the hotel offers 66 rooms beautifully designed, including 23 family rooms and 6 suites. Whichever room you decide to take, you will feel comfortable in a home away from home. The Kivu Sands restaurant offers buffet breakfast, dinner, lunch and an a la carte option. The bar is fully stocked with a collection of wines and spirits and the terrace offers entertainment in the evenings. Meals are delicious and well prepared by an expert chef; both local and international ingredients are used.

After an early breakfast, drive to Ruhengeri/Kinigi where you embark on the incredible experience of gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park. Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience. When you get to the gorillas, you are allowed to spend an hour with them. Head back to the base in time for a late lunch, although some gorilla families are more elusive and tracking can take a full day.

Gorilllas Nest Lodge is situated in the foothill of the Virunga Volcanoes, adjacent to Volcanoes National Park in the northern part of Rwanda. The lodge has a standby generator where you can charge a few of your gadgets. It’s surrounded by a grove of trees that offer a calm and peaceful environment. On a sunny day, you will get a beautiful view of the volcanoes. Its closeness to the national park makes it an ideal place for gorilla trekking, it’s only 5 minutes to the park headquarters.

We drive back to Kigali and embark on a city tour visiting the Genocide Memorial site and African art and craft markets. Transfer to airport for your flight.
