Trip Highlights

Why do we often spend more than 1 night at a place? Animals move and present themselves in different positions and light. We want to give you sufficient time to stay at a sighting – you choose when to leave. Transfers from park to park are costing time. In Kenya tourist cars have a speed governor by law at 80 km/h. Lorries and other slow moving vehicles can delay you when a safe place for overtaking is not nearby. Roads also have bendings that slow down.

Our driver/guides have many years experience in the bush. Not only do they know every small path but can also tell you a lot about the area, tribes, mammals, plants and birds. You are in safe and knowledgable hands.

We have chosen mid to high end lodges. Important to us is that you can see wildlife in and around the lodges and that the location is strategically good for game drives so you won’t miss the best light in the morning and evening.

Our itineraries are flexible. You can book your private safari according to your preferences and period.

Day by Day Overview

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport you will be welcomed and taken to the hotel for overnight and dinner if you wish (at own cost).

Accommodation: Safari Park Hotel (D/BF)

Quite a long but scenic drive to the north and along Mount Kenya through the corn chamber called ‘White Highlands’. At lunch time you will have arrived at the lodge on the bank of Ewaso Ngiro River. Later in the afternoon you will experience your first game drive and stay out in the field until the light will get softer and golden. This is also the time animals come out from the shade.

Samburu belongs to the more northern region in Kenya. The National Reserve is between hills and the Ewaso Nyrio River with its gallery forest. Typical animals: reticulated giraffe, Grevy zebra, gerenunk, Beisa oryx as well as elephants, lions, leopards and others. Samburu Lodge is directly on the bank of the Ewaso Nyrio River and you can watch elephants bathing and playing in the river.

Accommodation: Samburu Lodge (D/FB)

Depending on the animal’s whereabouts you undertake morning and afternoon game drives on either side of the river. Lunch and heat rest will be in the lodge. The Ewaso Ngiro River with its beautiful gallery forest is the boundary. Many animals like spending time in the gallery forest while some prefer to be up on the hills. Early morning you might be lucky and find a leopard walking, watch elephants and antelopes come to the river to drink. Also luck is when the big cats have young and a high light is seeing them hunting or eating.

Accommodation: Samburu Lodge (D/FB)

After breakfast and checking out you shift to Shaba. If you like you can have the luggage dropped at the lodge which is just 1 kilometer from the entrance before you start the game drive. Lunch is at the lodge at the bank of Ewaso Nyiro River and the afternoon is spent out in the field searching for antelopes and elephants.  Shaba is the largest of the three bordering reserves. Embedded along the Ewaso Ngiro River in-between tall mountains which the sun colours orange in the evening, so you can experience “Alpengluehen” in Africa.

Accommodation: Sarova Shaba Lodge (D/FB)

The road takes you up from 1,200 m above sea level to the foot of Mount Kenya at 1,800 m above sea level. You will arrive later in the morning and see already some game on the way to the camp where you check in for lunch and heat rest. Ol Pejeta has one of the largest population of white and northern black rhinos as well as lions, cheetahs and leopards. Furthermore they have a chimpanzee orphanage where in collaboration with Jane Goodall they found a home.

Accommodation: Serena Sweet Waters Camp (D/FB)

During the morning and afternoon game drives you search for the animals that occur here and spend time taking pictures and observing them with Mount Kenya in the background. Believe it, it is never boring here – Mt. Kenya has different faces and the variety of game is just great. You will also spend time with the chimpanzees.

Accommodation: Serena Sweet Waters Camp (D/FB)

After breakfast you leave the foot of Mount Kenya and shift to the foot of the Aberdare Range. This range consists of extinct volcanoes and is at the same time the rim of the Great Rift Valley.  Lunch is served in the colonial style house of the Aberdare Country Club. Have a stroll in the beautiful garden with old trees, bush bucks and many birds. In the afternoon you will be driven with a game drive to The Ark which is built in the middle of the mountain forest. While driving to The Ark through the park you might come across the impressive, black, giant forest hogs, elephants, leopard, various monkeys and antelopes from small to large. The Ark is a night observation Lodge. From various platforms you can observe elephants, buffalos and bush bucks coming to drink and lick salt. Spotted hyenas can be heard and seen while Giant Forest Hogs come to graze. You might also spot a bush baby or a genet cat near the lodge.

Accommodation: The Ark – night observation lodge with water holes and salt licks (D/FB)

While driving up the Aberdare Range you pass different vegetation belts – mountain forest – bamboo, rose wood (Hagenia) and Podocarpus, until you reach the moorland with heather, erica, tussock grass and St. John’s Wort flowering yellow. Keep looking out for black and mantled white colobus monkeys, bushbucks, reedbucks, waterbucks, black-fronted duikers, buffaloes, elephants and many more.

On foot you walk down a short but steep distance to see the Chania Falls. Enjoy your picnic lunch before descending through vegetation belts into the Great Rift Valley. Later in the afternoon you will reach Lake Nakuru National Park and stop if you spot interesting animals on the way to the lodge on a hill inside the park. Should there be a lot of rain you will drive on the tarmac road around the escarpment to Lake Nakuru.

Accommodation: Lake Nakuru Lodge (D/FB)

An early breakfast before you head to the lake to see flamingos, pelicans and other water birds. Then search for white and black rhino, Rothschild giraffe, buffalo, jackal and others. The Rothschild giraffe, an endangered species, was introduced here and is successfully breeding. Return to the lodge for lunch and heat rest. Around 4 pm your afternoon game drive starts.

Accommodation: Lake Nakuru Lodge (D/FB)

Drive to Nairobi. From the edge of the Great Rift Valley you will look down towards the volcanoes Suswa and Longonot. Then proceed to Nairobi and enjoy lunch at the famous Carnivore Restaurant. Vegetarian menues are also available. If you wish you can freshen up in a dayroom at Four Points by Sheraton at Jomo Kenyatta Airport up to 18.00.
