This 6 day itinerary entails you traveling by comfortable and enjoyable overland transport from Lusaka to Livingstone, the tourist capital city of Zambia. Livingstone is also dubbed as the ‘adventure activity centre’ of Southern Africa. There is live commentary  in English on-board. This adventurous overland tour safari is available throughout the whole year. It is done twice in a week every Tuesdays and Saturdays commencing from Lusaka. Travel time between Lusaka and Livingstone, a distance of 485.4 kms is two (2) days. This is because of some exciting stopover excursions along the way for maximum tour enjoyment and pleasure. There is a one night sleep stopover in Choma, a somewhat midway town between Lusaka and Livingstone. The remaining days are spent in Livingstone enjoying various adventure and cultural activities.

Zambia is a land-locked Southern African country surrounded by eight neighboring countries, endowed with extremely rich cultural and natural heritage of both movable and immovable nature of high plateaus, numerous rivers and valleys. These natural features are best explored through overland transport tour safari. An immediate vehicle stop can immediately be executed upon spotting any exciting event or activity along the way. On this overland trip, you will see the beautiful natural scenery along the main T-1 road from Lusaka up to Livingstone! Zambia is considered as one of the safest tourist destinations in Africa. Full of adventure activities, Livingstone, your final destination has today become the tourist heartbeat of southern Africa. It is home to the mighty Victoria Falls, a World Heritage Site and Africa’s “Adventure Capital”.

Day by Day Overview

You arrive in Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia.  Please not that we do not provide accommodation for Day 1 in Lusaka.

Our hospitality team of greeters  will meet you at your hotel/lodge on the evening before the commencement of the tour for a meet and greet session.

Friendly advice: For convenience’s sake, you could consider staying at the same StayEasy Hotel in Lusaka. This can be a convenient arrangement for you so that on the morning of the commencement of the tour, our staff will find you waiting in the hotel lobby of StayEasy Hotel.

Travel on Route (T–1) from Lusaka to Choma. This is Zambia’s main tourist road (485.4 km) which forms the principal transport axis of Southern Province, the tourist hub region of Zambia, and continues to Livingstone. Pass through Monze and arrive in Choma for the night.

You will travel in a comfortable overland vehicle ranging either from SUV 4x4D to an overland truck/bus. The type of vehicle to be used depends on the number of participants at any given departure date.

05:30 am: Wakeup; thereafter take a morning bath.

05:30 am – 06:50 am – Eat your delicious breakfast. Receive short briefing from the Tour Director on some pertinent issues such as important country information and safety issues.

06:00 am: Depart from Lusaka, travel southward on the main Zambia’s T–1 tourist road. You will see the icon FINDECO house around the Kafue Roundabout, the tallest office building complex in Zambia.

About 50 kms from Lusaka, you will reach a small road-side town of Kafue (its name is derived from the Kafue River, one of Zambia’s major rivers). This town has no major things of tourism interest worth a stop-over.

 07:50 am: After Kafue town, we will head to one of Zambian’s unique natural landmark; the Kafue River and state-of-art Kafue Road Bridge. The vehicle will slow down on the Kafue Bridge. You will have a chance to have a closer view of the Kafue River. Kafue is one of the main rivers of Zambia, the main source and water supply to the greater Lusaka city population. The tour guide will be close by to provide more detailed information on these two important landmarks.

08:20 am: You will experience the true Zambian culture of this beautiful country along the way to Mazabuka.  The vehicle will wind its way through beautiful landscape, passing through some green commercial farms, traditional African villages and schools along the way to Mazabuka.

10:30 am – Arrive in Mazabuka, dubbed “The Sweetest Town” in Zambia. This is because sugar canes that are processed into edible household sugar are grown on a large scale in Mazabuka.

11:30 am – Depart for Monze, the next town after Mazabuka.   You will see large sugar plantations on the way out of Mazabuka town. You will pass a number of small village siding settlements along the way to Monze, approximately 72 kms from Mazabuka.

13:20 pm: Arrive in Monze: – An agriculture town, with an estimated population of 163,578 people. Visit Samu Lya Moomba heritage site.

13:30 pm: Eat a sumptuous lunch at Food  any good restaurant in Monze town.

13:00 pm – Depart for Choma,  by passing through Family Safari to see some resident wildlife . Choma is the provincial headquarters of southern province (97.4 kms from Monze). You will pass through small village siding along the way, namely Rusangu, Chisekesi, Pemba, Muzoka, Batoka in that order before reaching Choma (Distance is 285km from Lusaka and 188km from Livingstone).

Overview of Choma town

Choma is a market town and is the provincial headquarters of Southern Province of Zambia. It lies on Zambia’s main T-1 tourist road. It is home to Choma museum and craft centre, a museum dedicated to displaying the cultural heritage of the Tonga people of southern province of Zambia.

15:00 pm: Arrive in Choma for a one overnight sleepover excursion.

16:00 pm – 17:00 pm:  Leave to a good Lodge within Choma town for an evening of relaxation and overnight sleepover.

 18:00 pm – 19:00 pm:  Enjoy an evening sumptuous dinner.

 19:00 pm – 21:30 pm:  Evening resting and goodnight sleep over.

08:00 am – 08:30 am: Wake up call, bath and thereafter eat your delicious morning breakfast.

08:40 am: Load your personal belongings into the tour vehicle. Bid farewell to newly found Choma friends.

09:00 am: Shall immediately commence touring Choma museum and craft centre including the art gallery.

Narration: Undertake an outdoor tour of the Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula statue within the grounds of Choma museum. The late Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula is a former political freedom fighter icon who contributed immensely to the attainment of Zambia’s political freedom and independence from British colonial masters.

06:20 am – Leave for Kalomo travelling by road southwards on the original T-1 main tourist road of Zambia (The Livingstone – Lusaka main tourist road).

See the Kalundu Mound: About 3 km before reaching Kalomo, on the main road, is a slightly raised mound (a matter of just a few metres) of earth through which the road passes. This marks the site of an Iron-Age village, and the mound is the accumulated debris of many centuries of occupation.   

08:00 am – 09:40 am: Arrive in Kalomo town, the first colonial capital city of Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia).  In 1907, Kalomo became the colonial capital centre of what was then known as Northern-Western Rhodesia. In 1911 it became the capital of Northern Rhodesia, what is today called Zambia.

Visit  and tour (1) The Pioneer Gravesite  (2). Colonial administrator’s residence  (3)  Site of the first of standard chartered bank in North-west Rhodesia (4) Kalundu Mound.

16:00 pm – 17:10 pm – Arrive in Livingstone, the final destination of your safari trip but the beginning of some exciting adventure and cultural activities!

Overview of Livingstone

Livingstone is the tourist capital city of Zambia and Adventure capital centre of Southern Africa. Livingstone town is named after the famous Victorian missionary explorer, Dr David Livingstone who explored this area extensively.  Livingstone Town was established in 1905. As a major European settlement, being close to the Zambezi River crossing over to Southern Rhodesia, the town was made the capital of Northern Rhodesia in 1911. The capital was moved to Lusaka in 1935. .A major event in 2011 was the installation of the town’s first set of traffic lights!

12:30 pm – 14:00 pm: – Check-in  a good lodge in Livingstone.

17:00 pm – 18:30 pm: Relax and spend quality time with travel colleagues. Recollect on the exciting events of the just completed travel journey from Lusaka to Livingstone. Sit around the open foyer outside the lodge or inside by the bar whilst taking your beverages at your own cost.

09: 30 pm21:45 pm: Eat sumptuous dinner.

 Night life: Those interested in night life. You are free to go out to any night club around Livingstone city and enjoy beverages on your own cost.

 23:00 am: Retire for a goodnight sleep.

Today explore the mighty Victoria Falls, a UNESCO-listed waterfall — one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the largest falling sheet of water of the world, Victoria Falls is perched on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Program of the Day

 06:10 am: Wakeup call; thereafter take a warm shower.

07:00 am07: 30: am – Enjoy morning breakfast.

 07:30 am – 07:35 am: Group briefing and motivational session by the Tour Director.

07:35 am – 08:00 am: Travel and take a tour of the mighty Victoria Falls. The falls is locally called Mosi-oa-Tunya – “The Smoke That Thunders”.

 08:15 am – 09:30 am: Take an unforgettable Victoria Falls experience. Commence touring the Victoria Falls for 1hr 30min. Take a group photo session taken against the background of this incredible falling sheet of water that is the Victoria Falls.

 10:10 am: Visit curio market outside the entrance of the Victoria Falls.

12:30 pm – 13:30 pm: Take lunch at an up – market restaurant in Livingstone city. Transferred back to MAMATCHO (I) and (II) Lodges for 1hr of rest.

 14:30pm: Visit the Livingstone museum for 1hr.30 minutes. Well presented and hugely informative centre worthy a visit.

Activity: Mukuni Village Visit

Experience this exciting cultural tour by travelling to Mukuni Village on the outskirts of Livingstone city but within the municipal boundaries of Livingstone. You will learn more about African Traditional and Cultural Lifestyle in real-time for 4 hours.

What you will do

You will spend time connecting and interacting with community village members in genuine functioning African traditional villages. You will experience what daily African village life is like in Zambia’s rural areas in real-time for 4 hours.

This cultural tour is all executed professionally by a versatile team of knowledgeable indigenous young Zambians. The entire tour program is under the close supervision of the Chief Experience Officer (CEO). All staff posses’ in-depth local indigenous African knowledge. They are passionate about African tradition and cultural values that will ensure a memorable stay to sever for YOU!

The tour starts from Livingstone the tourist capital city of Zambia and adventure capital centre of southern Africa. Machenje village ward of the greater Mukuni Village near Victoria Falls in Livingstone is the centre location of your cultural activities.

Planned cultural itinerary program

 04:30 pm: Picked from your Lodge and transferred to Machenje village ward of Mukuni village.

 05:00 pm – 05: 10 pm – Arrive at Machenje village ward. Receive short briefing offered by the Chief Experience Officer (CEO). You will be oriented on some pertinent issues such as personal safety, required eco-tour practices and some important country information and expected local social etiquette.

 05:20 pm: Commence touring various village homesteads in Machenje village ward under the guidance of a certified and trained village Tour Guide. All communications are done in English. We also have translators in Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese Mandarin languages for non-English speaking clients available only on request.

Action: You will enter in the respective yard of each home village, welcomed and greeted with a hearty Zambian traditional handshake and smile. You will be taken into the bowls and heart of these truly functioning African villages. You will see for yourself firsthand what goes on there in these villages on a regular basis.

 06:30 pm: Transferred from Machenje village to Chipego-Machenje Born Fire site in a secluded bushy area, centre for all proceeding cultural activities.

You will be welcomed to Chipego-Machenje Born Fire site traditional way of loud African voice ululation by women folks and drumming. You will be presented with some beautiful Zambian made gifts by the village headman or any of his representatives.

 07:00 pm: “Discover the power of consuming a plant-based diet rooted in African and Indigenous practices”

Action: Dinner prepared in an African traditional way; Eat a plant-based food

”Eat healthy, nutritious, and culturally African appropriate organic traditional super-foods and drinks”

You will be served with a traditionally prepared Zambian plant – based ancestral African foods and drink that are classified as super foods.

Zambia traditional foods are used as treatment of circulatory diseases such as diabetes, cancer diseases loosely referred to as “diseases of civilization”. Diseases of civilization emanates from consuming sugary drinks, fast fried fatty foods (4Fs) and donuts.

Any of the dearest ladies in your company sit legs stretched out on mat reeds. Men sit on African made traditional stools and food will be served on traditional tables made from bushy sticks.

 07:30 pm: Members of the village community join at site. Commencement of an exciting evening of traditional and cultural entertainment activities around a massive born fire as the only source of lighting and warmth.

07:40 pm: Commencement of evening traditional entertainment activities.

The traditional dancing is the main form of entertainment in most rural areas of Zambia. Songs are a means of passing on beliefs, legends, folklore and history to the future generations.

Activities

  1. First Round of local traditional and cultural dancing.

– The local traditional and cultural dancing group welcomes you by playing a welcoming hearty Zambian traditional song and dance.

– Will entertain you with a number of traditional dances and songs. You are welcome to join in the dancing and free to take photos.

– KUTWA traditional procession will be demonstrated to you.

This is traditional music connected with work, in particular pounding songs. In the past, much of a woman’s life was centered around pounding as it took a long time to pound for the ordinary meals of the day. When a woman was pounding she was usually singing, so over the years she built up quite an extensive repertoire of pounding songs.

At the end of the first round of local traditional and cultural dancing, you move to the borne fire for the next evening entertainment activity.

  1. Storytelling and poetry

Storytelling and poetry shall be done and offered by the village elder tribesmen. You will learn about the old Zambian folklore and ancient stories that bound African families together for centuries.

  1. Indigenous traditional games.

Traditional indigenous games are deeply rooted in African history that the people of old practiced as a part of their social amenities and well being. Interesting indigenous games will be showed cased such as;

(a) Kankuluwale: It is a choice game played by both boys and girls between the ages of 7- 15 years. Like any other game, a smooth surface area is chosen as a play field.

(b) Nsale Nsale chikamba is a game played during the day or evening time when there is a full moon, it is actually more interesting in the evening than during the day time. A smooth surface area is used as a play ground.

  1. Last round of local traditional and cultural dancing.

You will give the last round of traditional song and dancing. You will be invited to join in the dancing as this is a grand finale of all cultural activities on the itinerary.

 08:30 pm: End of the 4 hours cultural tour of activities.

You will be transferred back to your Lodge for a good night rest of sleep.
