Day by Day Overview
You will be picked up from the airport by a All Wheels Experience representative and driven to your accommodation in Arusha. Depending on your arrival time, you will hopefully have time to relax and prepare for the adventure of a lifetime.
Busy Arusha is an essential part of safari life here in northern Tanzania and most travelers pass through at some stage.
Your All Wheels Experience safari guide will collect you from your accommodation after breakfast, and you’ll set off for Tarangire National Park. The drive to the park is approximately two and a half hours on well-maintained tarmac roads. Tarangire, named after the river that runs through it, becomes a vital water source for wildlife during the dry season. The park is renowned for its large elephant families, often seen gathering near the river. You’ll also have the chance to spot giraffe, bushbuck, hartebeest, and possibly predators such as lions and leopards. Tarangire is home to more breeding species of birds than any other park in the world. As you explore, you’ll be surrounded by massive, ancient Baobab trees, some over a thousand years old.
Lunch will be at a scenic picnic site within the park. After your game drive, you’ll travel to your accommodation in Karatu for the night.
After breakfast, you will journey into the cooler, higher regions of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. As you approach the Ngorongoro Crater, it feels like discovering a hidden world. Encircled by steep volcanic walls, the crater shelters a pristine wilderness of sweeping savannah, pockets of acacia woodlands, and shimmering lakes and swamps. Formed two to three million years ago when a massive volcano erupted and collapsed, the crater spans an impressive 260 km².
The Ngorongoro Crater is renowned for its geological wonders and as a natural sanctuary, home to some of the densest populations of large mammals in Africa. As you descend into the crater, you’ll encounter vast numbers of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and over 500 species of birds. This unique ecosystem also offers one of the best opportunities to spot the critically endangered black rhino.
After your exploration of the crater, you’ll continue your journey through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and enter the southern region of the Serengeti National Park.
The Serengeti is nothing short of breathtaking, known for its vast, open grasslands that offer remarkable wildlife viewing opportunities. Its climate and vegetation have remained largely unchanged for millions of years. While the Serengeti is home to an abundance of wildlife year-round, it is perhaps most famous for the annual Great Migration, where enormous herds of wildebeest, alongside zebras and antelopes, traverse the plains in search of fresh grazing lands. The migration can be witnessed throughout the year—it’s all about knowing where to find them during any given season.
The key is to discover the best locations to view the animals at specific times of the year. Alongside these iconic scenes, you’ll have a great chance of encountering predators such as lions, cheetahs, and leopards, making this a truly unforgettable and life-changing experience.
In the afternoon, you’ll begin your return journey to Karatu, with the possibility of encountering even more of the Serengeti’s wonders along the way!
After breakfast, you’ll head to Lake Manyara National Park, a small yet remarkably diverse park located 120 km west of Arusha. The landscapes here are on an impressive scale—while the park is compact (one of the narrowest in Africa), it’s also epic, with the Great Rift Escarpment towering over its western boundary. The park’s namesake, Lake Manyara, is a shallow, saltwater lake that expands and contracts with the seasons, providing a haven for thousands of wading birds, including flamingos and over 500 other bird species.
As you explore, you may encounter baboons and elephants in the park’s lush evergreen forest, and keep an eye out for the famous tree-climbing lions, a unique sight that has made Lake Manyara well-known across Africa.
You’ll enjoy a picnic lunch within the park, and after your game drive, it will be time to bid farewell to your guide. You will be dropped off at a location of your choice, such as Arusha, Kilimanjaro Airport, or Arusha Airport. We hope your adventure with All Wheels Experience has been unforgettable!
