Day by Day Overview
Pick up from your hotel in Nairobi at 6 am for the drive to Chogoria town for an early lunch. After lunch, take a transfer vehicle to Chogoria gate from where the walk starts. You will walk for 9 km through the forest along the dirt and sometimes very muddy road for 3 hrs to reach Lake Ellis Camp. Lake Ellis possesses a beauty that will captivate anyone daring enough to take the journey there.
Dinner and overnight at Lake Ellis Camp
After breakfast, you will follow the trail as it leads up through glades of montane forest climbing away from Lake Ellis on its west side, across moorland to a ridge which eventually joins the main Chogoria trail. Lunch will be served at the camp, this is possible as our crews always walk ahead of guests to make sure the tents and the lunch is on time just before we get into the camp. Beautiful views of Vivienne Falls and the Gorges Valley on descent to the picturesque campsite next to Lake Michaelson.
Dinner and overnight at Lake Ellis Camp
Breakfast will be served around 7.30 am since today’s hike is rather short. Climbing away from the beautiful Lake Michaelson ascend into the alpine zone, a world of rock and ice as we go up towards the main peaks, leaving behind the giant lobelias and groundsels and onto glacial moraine. A last short sharp scree slope takes us to Simba Tarn where we overnight. It will be a cold night depending with the weather on that day, extra layer of warm clothes is advised, as you are just few meters to the peak.
Dinner and overnight at Simba Tarn Camp
An early start at around 5 am for a cup of tea or coffee before setting off on a relatively easy 2-hour climb up to Point Lenana, the trekking summit at 4,985 m. See the nearby peaks of Nelion and Batian glinting in the morning sun. In the far distance, if clear, it’s possible to see the summit of Kilimanjaro 400 km away. After spending 30-45 mins taking pictures and celebrating hitting the summit, we proceed to Shipton Camp for breakfast and continue down to Old Moses Camp for dinner.
Dinner and overnight at Old Moses Camp
After breakfast, descend through the rain forest for 9 km to Sirimon Park Gate at 2,600m where you will connect with our transport back to Nairobi, arriving at approximately 1 pm.
