Tour Overview

At 4,507m Karisimbi is Rwanda’s highest mountain and Africa’s fifth highest, an inactive volcano in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The name Karisimbi means ‘white shell’ referring to the white capped summit, often covered in snow during the rainy season. Take two days to hike up Karisimbi, camping for one night at 3,700 m, then reaching the summit the next day. It’s a tough adventure that you need to be physically fit enough to achieve, but very rewarding with spectacular views and fascinating flora and fauna including primates, birds and exotic plants. This trip complements a trek to see gorilla and/or golden monkeys as well as a visit to Dian Fossey’s grave which is at nearby Karisoke Research Center.
